This month we hear from longtime DPRG member and highly respected robot builder David Anderson, with a presentation titled, “How Waypoint Navigation is Implemented on my Robots”.

With a powerful yet easy to understand style, David’s presentation will walk us through 3 important topics using a combination of design philosophy, implementation, and demonstration examples:

  • Motion Control
  • Waypoint Navigation
  • Advanced Navigation Modes

The meeting will start at 1:00 PM CDT on Saturday June 12th, 2021. You can join the meeting by joining Google Meet at https://meet.google.com/hey-jxuo-esf , or joining by phone ‪‪+1 405-586-5598‬ ‬ PIN: ‪682 931 335 #‬.

Outdoor Rover Series: ExoMy– Open-Source Model from The European Space Agency – DPRG Virtual Monthly Meeting, May 8th, 2021

Meeting Video:

Chat Record:  chat record (PDF)

This month DPRG welcomes special guests Miro Voellmy and Max Erhardt, ex-members of the European Space Agency team, who will present from Germany and Switzerland! Their presentation is on the educational mobile robot, ExoMy. ExoMy is inspired by the Mars rover Rosalind Franklin of the European Space Agency.

ExoMy features a triple-bogie locomotion subsystem with six steerable wheels. All mechanical parts are 3D printed. The electronics consist of a battery, power distribution, on board computer and camera, using parts that are widely available and cost-efficient. The software allows teleoperation of ExoMy using a gamepad, or a custom web interface which provides a camera view. It is programmed in Python, within the ROS framework to make future expansion easy and is deployed with Docker.

The project is published under an open-source license and comprehensive assembly and installation instructions are provided. ExoMy has successfully been built by people all around the world and is a great introduction to space robotics for students and enthusiasts.

Learn more about ExoMy at its project web page https://esa-prl.github.io/ExoMy/ and wiki https://github.com/esa-prl/ExoMy/wiki

RoboColumbus-Plus Remote Location Guidelines and Rules Update

The RoboColumbus-Plus competition page has been updated with guidelines detailing how to join this year’s competition from a remote location. DPRG hopes that the many friends and potential friends who can’t travel to the local Dallas competition can join by setting up a remote course and using Google Meet to participate in the fun and challenges of an outdoor rover competition.

The RoboColumbus-Plus rules have been updated to add a new contest category and challenge. Participants now have the option of running their robot in the “robot-planned” category and taking the 3-waypoint challenge. In this challenge, the robot must depend completely on it algorithms to complete the course with only 3 target waypoints. The robot’s owner is not allowed to pre-walk the course during the competition or use additional waypoints besides the 3 given by the judges.
